The modern casino gaming industry is one of the largest and most lucrative global industries. Land-based and online casinos generate revenues amounting to multiple millions of dollars, in some cases billions, so naturally, there’s a lot at stake when it comes to maintaining fairness and security.

Let’s take a look at the security measures that modern land-based and online casinos employ.

At a minimum, any reputable casino will be secured with a comprehensive surveillance system, typically operated and monitored by highly trained experts who can identify any sleight of hand methods used by both players and employees.

Security guards are a welcome and familiar presence in casinos, and while they may not be as high-tech as some of the other methods we’ll discuss, they’re certainly some of the most effective. Most casinos will have around 20/25 different security codes that these pros on the front-line will need to memorise. Some casinos even ensure that their guards are never more than 120 seconds away from other areas of the casino, such as the gaming floor, the cage and the bank vault.

But things don’t stop there. From RFID chips to cryptocurrency, casinos in the 21st century are embracing advanced technology, integrating many high level systems to ensure their clientele and premises are kept as secure as possible.

Camera surveillance has taken a monumental leap forward by incorporating facial recognition technology. Casinos now not only monitor the clients who walk through the door, but they also scan their faces and run the results through a comprehensive data bank to ensure that these visitors haven’t had any previous altercations. Using technology like NORA (Non Obvious Relationship Analysis) to do background checks ensures that this method is even more accurate and effective.

Higher denomination chips are marked with RFID technology; they need to be scanned by the casino that owns the chip before they can be traded for cash. This method was originally used as an anti-fraud measure, but RFID chips have also proven to be an effective way to prevent robberies. Casinos can turn off the RFID tracking in any stolen or misused chips, meaning that they effectively become completely worthless.

How online casinos keep their players safe

As gaming platforms at the forefront of technology, online casinos incorporate a range of digital methods to keep player details safe and secure, whilst ensuring that the safety of their sites and apps are never compromised. Since there are still a number of unregulated and even illegal gaming sites active in 2019, you can identify a reputable platform that you can feel safe spending your money in by using the following precautions and safety measures

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) Data Encryption – The minimal amount of security an online casino needs to integrate, 128 or 256-bit encryption is a must for online transactions. This technology basically turns sensitive customer information, like personal addresses or credit card details, into strings of unbreakable code. This is the same level of online security used by banks and other financial institutions all over the world.

RNG (Random Number Generators) – An RNG is an algorithm that is used to ensure the fairness of games, like roulette games, online slots, poker etc. Whenever a certain action in a game is triggered, such as spinning the wheel in slots game, the RNG generates a completely random sequence of symbols or numbers that cannot be mathematically predicted beforehand. Independent auditing bodies like eCOGRA regularly and randomly test RNG in platforms all over the world, enabling casinos to display approved badges on their homepages when they pass.

Know Your Customer (KYC) technology – Finally, online casinos will make a point of deploying state of the art KYC technology to ensure that only registered account holders can log in, play and make withdrawals or deposits on the platform. This prevents the use of casinos by underage players, but is also a powerful tool in the prevention of fraud and virtual money laundering.
